Sheridan looks set for Spireites' hot-seat
CHESTERFIELD fans will at last find out the name of their new manager tomorrow.
It looks set to be former Wednesday midfielder John Sheridan, aged 44, who was manager of Oldham Athletic for almost three years.
Stretford-born Sheridan was at Manchester City as a youngster before grabbing attention at Leeds United, playing under Eddie Gray, Billy Bremner and Howard Wilkinson.
After a difference of opinion with Wilkinson he was sold to Nottingham Forest for 650,000 but played once under Brian Clough and soon moved to Ron Atkinson's Owls for 500,000.
Seven years at Hillsborough peaked when he scored the winner against Manchester United in the League Cup final at Wembley, alongside former Chesterfield players Danny Wilson and Lawrie Madden.
In 1990-91 Wednesday were promoted to the top flight and two years later they reached both domestic cup finals. Sheridan played in both, losing twice to Arsenal.
Loan spells at Birmingham City and Bolton Wanderers preceded a permanent move to Burnden Park, though he missed Spireites memorable FA Cup 4th round win their in 1997. Trotters were promoted to the Premier League.
A short spell at non-league Doncaster Rovers seemed to signal an end to his senior playing career but he joined Andy Ritchie's Oldham Athletic in 1998 and made more than 160 appearances .
He had spells as caretaker boss after the departures of Andy Ritchie and then Iain Dowie but he was given the permanent job in 2006. In his first season in charge Latics reached the League One play-offs but they lost in the semi to Blackpool.
Last season Oldham were fourth up to February. Then, in an incident at Belle Vue dog track, Sheridan and striker Lee Hughes allegedly brawled. The next Saturday Oldham lost 6-2 against MK Dons and the 34 times capped Republic of Ireland man was sacked.
