Sheridan learns from Wilko and Ron

New Chesterfield boss John Sheridan always wanted to continue in the game after retiring from playing.

The ex-Oldham manager says: "I just love the buzz of being in and around football. I've been in the game a long time, most of it as a player, it's over 25 years now.

"As a manager I like to think that I can improve footballers and at this level the most important thing is getting consistency into your game.

"A lot of players play at this level for a reason - that's not being disrespectful.

"So if I can get consistency, they're all very good players and we can get out of this division."

On two of his managerial mentors, he commented: "I learned a lot from the managers that I played for; they were all very different as well. Ron Atkinson was the best man-manager I played under, he just seemed to know how to get the best out of players.

"Howard Wilkinson was very strict and thorough in how we trained so I've learned from them all; but I'm my own man."

After leaving Boundary Park, where he'd never seen his side finish lower than eighth in League One, he said: "It's a challenge for me after my first job at Oldham, where I felt that I did a good job.

"I don't know why I got sacked at Oldham but I know what I did there as a manager and I was very pleased with it for a first job. We were unfortunate not to get them out of the division. Things were said when I left but that's gone now."

Striker Jack Lester, contracted for one more year at Saltergate, looks set to extend that deal for a further season.
