Quartet star as Spireites boost survival prospects

THERE is light at the end of the tunnel for bottom-of-the-table Chesterfield.

Goals from Jack Lester and Josh Thompson helped the Spireites beat Colchester at the weekend and secure their first victory in League One since September 17. It saw them avoid an unwanted club record of 17 matches without a win and moved them to within five points of safety.

Both Lester and Thompson make the cut in a side dominated by Spireites players. Centre-half Thompson, on loan from Celtic until the end of the season, nodded in Liam Ridehalgh’s free-kick to seal the triumph and marshalled the back four superbly in the closing stages.

Normally John Sheridan utilises Lester’s qualities in home matches but the Chesterfield manager opted to start the wily striker at Colchester and he repaid his faith by scoring the opener.

Tommy Lee gets in between the sticks while I’ve chosen Ridehalgh in a left wing-back slot. The Huddersfield Town loanee claimed two assists and made a major impact in an unfamiliar left wing position.

I’ve selected Sheffield United’s Matthew Lowton in the right wing-back role while Danny Batth and Michael Raynes, who produced an assured display in another home defeat for Rotherham United, partner Thompson in the centre.

David Perkins worked hard throughout Barnsley’s loss to Millwall. He put himself about and tried to get on the ball to dictate things.

Lee Williamson, who controversially had a goal disallowed at Charlton, and Stephen Quinn were United’s top performers at The Valley and are picked in the middle with the industrious Perkins.

Yet again, Chris O’Grady was outstanding for Sheffield Wednesday and is paired with Lester.
