CHESTERFIELD are going to Wembley!

Tonight, in a disciplined and controlled show at Boundary Park, they beat Oldham Athletic 1-0 in the Johnstone’s Paint Trophy northern area final second leg (3-1 on aggregate.)

It sets up a visit to Wembley on March 25 to face the victor from the Swindon Town v Barnet southern final.

That represents a hot in the arm for Chesterfield fans who have seen their team struggle in the league.

In this JP competition, though, Spireites had gone into tonight leading 2-1 from the first leg, courtesy of goals from Scott Boden and a Danny Whitaker penalty.

They had an early scare when a shot by former Sheffield Wednesday warhorse Shefki Kuqi from inside the penalty box struck the post.

The visitors were under the cosh as they sought to avoid an early aggregate leveller and they were fortunate when Kuqi missed another chance on 15 minutes.

Drew Talbot forced a save from Alex Cisak as Chesterield. next to bottom of League One and seven places adrift of Oldham, came out of their shell.

But home defender Paul Black almost tipped the balance when his cross fell to Robbie Simpson, who headed wide.

Australian midfielder James Wesolowski gave Spireites the last fright of the first half with a right-footer just wide of the target.

The second period signalled a slightly more progressive look about John Sheridan’s men, Jack Lester and Talbot attempting speculative efforts.

And with Chesterfield defending with steely focus, the omens were looking good for a scoreless game.

The match got niggly as Oldham became more and more frustrated.

“ith minutes left, Kuqi’s diving header was kept out by the feet of Tommy Lee.

But in the 87th minute, predator Jack Lester scored from close range to seal the trip to Wembley.

Attendance: 5,662 including 937 from Derbyshire.
