It's Sheridan

CHESTERFIELD will unveil John Sheridan as their new manager today.

The former Owls midfielder will be named along with his former Oldham Athletic coaching colleagues, Tommy Wright and Mark Crossley.

The trio's recruitment means that Lee Richardson's former assistant, Scott Sellars, will leave the club having not had his contract renewed.

Sheridan, who was manager at Boundary Park for almost three years, has been bookies' favourite for some time, with Colin Calderwood seemingly his only serious competitor for the vacant post.

A former Republic of Ireland International, Sheridan's record at Oldham was reasonably good. He led the Latics to a play-off semi-final in his first season, just missed the top six in his second and he was surprisingly sacked in March this year with his side sitting in the play-off zone just over a week after a much-publicised 'brawl' on a players' night out at Belle Vue dog track.

He was once a teammate of Wright's at Elland Road.

Wright's playing career included spells at Oldham, Middlesbrough and in his native Scotland with St Johnstone and Livingston before a spell at Doncaster during their Conference days.

Crossley, expected to double up as coach and back-up keeper, had a loan spell at Hillsborough but is best remembered for a 13-year spell at Nottingham Forest, much of it under Brian Clough, who also signed Sheridan as a player.

The new manager had two caretaker spells in charge of Oldham before taking on the role permanently in 2006. In his 151 games in charge after that appointment he had 61 wins and 47 defeats. That's a win percentage in excess of 40 per cent compared to Richardson's rate of just under 35pc.

Sheridan will be expected to ensure the Spireites play open, adventurous football to match the expectations of the club's new majority shareholder, Dave Allen.

Chesterfield's chosen one

Born Oct 1, 1964, in Manchester.

Started his playing career as a trainee at Manchester City.

Joined Leeds in 1982 and played 267 games for them, scoring 52 goals and becoming known as one of the best players outside the top flight.

Signed by Forest manager Brian Clough for 650,000 in 1989 but played only one game for the club.

After he had been at Forest for only three months, Ron Atkinson took him to Hillsborough for 500,000 in November 1989.

Scored the Wednesday goal that beat Manchester United 1-0 in the Rumbelows League Cup final in 1991.

Was a key man in the Owls side that finished third in the top flight, played in Europe and played in the FA Cup Final and League Cup final in 1993.

Made the last of his 244 appearances for Wednesday in September, 1996, and joined Bolton two months later.

Played 34 times for the Republic of Ireland.

Appointed Oldham player-coach in October 2001, becoming manager three years ago.

Parted company with the Latics in March after a 6-2 defeat against MK Dons and a run of two wins in 10 games.
