It’s a mess at the back, admits Spireites coach Wright

Chesterfield: Spireites news, reports and more.

Spireites assistant manager Tommy Wright has accused his side’s defensive play of being “all over the place.”

Reflecting on his side’s home defeat by Exeter City, the Scot said: “Obviously it was very disappointing. I thought it was quite an even game where both teams had opportunities in the first half.

“The penalty miss (Danny Whitaker) deflated us and then we lost two poor goals.

“When people miss penalties you have to be more disciplined, you have to dig in and at least try and get a 0-0. They got a free header for the first goal from a cross into the box and it shouldn’t have happened really. We were all over the place for the second goal.”

All eyes this week will be on the transfer market after Chesterfield only managed to recruit defender Liam Ridehalgh on loan from Huddersfield Town last week.

The opening half to the season has confirmed the squad isn’t strong enough to compete in League One.

Results in the second half of the campaign now need to mirror those of a play-off chaser to stand any chance of survival and that can only be done with a massive boost to the playing strength.

Supporters, for the first time this season, began to show dissent towards the management following Exeter’s first goal at the weekend.

But with the next two league games both being long-distance away trips to Leyton Orient and Colchester United, there will be little dissent at those games.

Sandwiched between those two matches will be the home leg of the Northern Final of the Johnstone’s Paint Trophy against Oldham Athletic, so with just 180 minutes between Spireites and a possible Wembley trip, the atmosphere there would be mostly positive.
