Ex-Owl in Spireites link as Sheridan starts to recruit

CHESTERFIELD boss John Sheridan has hinted that he could make his first signing this week.

Though he has given no clues, there's plenty of speculation about potential new men.

Wing-back Paul Edwards, who has not signed a contract at current club Port Vale, is a strong candidate to join his ex-Oldham boss.

There's no doubt Sheridan will also be searching for a winger or two and, with Aaron Downes' cruciate set to keep him out for the first half of the season, a centre-back.

However it's in the striking department that most names are being bandied about.

Former Owls frontman Deon Burton, who was at Charlton last season, is one to be mentioned.

Michael Ricketts, who had a short spell at Oldham and has been released by Walsall, and Leon Constantine, freed by Northampton and known to Sheridan after a loan spell at Boundary Park, have been suggested as possible new faces.

There remains speculation over the future of Rob Page, Paul Harsley and Darren Currie at Saltergate.

The trio, all among the highest-paid players at Saltergate, didn't live up to expectations last season and could be the players the new manager is looking to offload.

Meanwhile, Chesterfield's season ticket sales are surviving the recession and are on a par with last season.

Finance Director Alan Walters said; "We've not quite reached the overall total of last season but we're just about level with sales at this time of the year. Despite the discount dates having passed, we're still selling a few each week. I'm quite pleased with the sales figures after the disappointment of last season and the reduction in crowds as the season went on."
