Breckin back at Saltergate for new season

CHESTERFIELD look to have seen off competition to land the last man to lead the side to promotion, Ian Breckin.

The central defender, 34 next month, was skipper at Saltergate back in the controversial Darren Brown season of 2000-01 when Chesterfield overcame a nine-point deduction and financial meltdown to win promotion from the basement.

Rotherham-born ex-Miller Breckin was released by Championship side Nottingham Forest at the end of last season despite being a regular in the second half of the campaign.

He was chased by several clubs, most vigorously by league newcomers Burton Albion as well as Walsall, but John Sheridan seems to have won the race to capture the man with more than 650 first team appearances under his belt.

An Auto Windscreens Shield Wembley winner with Rotherham United in 1996, in addition to going up at Saltergate he's also tasted two promotions at Wigan Athletic and skippered them into the Premier League. He also was captain as Forest won promotion to the Championship last year.

His first spell at Chesterfield came after a 100,000 move from Millmoor in 1997 and he stayed for five years.

Breckin looks tailor-made to captain Sheridan's side.
