Attacking instincts swung it for Sheridan

CHESTERFIELD chairman Barrie Hubbard has revealed that John Sheridan got the nod over ex-Northampton and Nottingham Forest manager Colin Calderwood to replace Lee Richardson in the Saltergate hot-seat.

He said: "There were two candidates that we were very interested in and I'd have been happy with either.

"We were very lucky to get the quality of applicants that we did."

On why the ex-Owls man got the nod over his Scottish rival, Hubbard indicated his style of football was a major factor.

"We'd obviously seen him play locally and we've seen what he did as the manager at Oldham," he said.

"He also interested our new major shareholder, Dave Allen, with his attacking football, so we hope everything's going to be great.

"You never know, but it's a big opportunity for everybody."

Ex-Blades academy coach Scott Sellars has followed Richardson through the Saltergate exit door.

Tommy Wright is the new assistant boss while Mark Crossley joins them on the coaching staff.

Three new faces is a new experience at Saltergate.

Paul Hart and Chris McMenemy came as a pair in 1988, as did John Duncan and Kevin Randall when they returned to the club in 1993.

Hubbard commented; "We're very pleased that Tommy and Mark could come in with John.

"They've worked with him before. He's very happy with them so that's a good start."

He added that Crossley will also be expected to battle for the keeper's shirt.

"Mark's coming here under a player's contract as well as a coaching contract so he'll keep an eye on Tommy Lee," he said.

"He'll makes sure Tommy's doing his job and Tommy will makes sure Mark's doing his job as well."

Sheridan, who played alongside Spireites defender Danny Hall at Oldham, has plenty of work to do to get to know his new charges.

"I know Jack Lester and Darren Currie and I like Derek Niven in midfield, but I don't know too much about the rest of the squad here," he admitted.
