With just 12 minutes to go, rock-bottom Spireites looked set for the win they desperately needed.
Dean Morgan’s first brace in a league game for nine years looked to have lifted Chesterfield off the bottom and above their hosts and closest rivals.
However, from 2-1 down Wycombe hit back. Thanks to some woeful defending from Chesterfield the home side levelled and then, in the fourth minute of time added on, won the game to cast the B2net side adrift at the foot of the table.
Wanderers’ goals from debutant Anthony McNamee, home debutant Marcello Trotta and a header from Stuart Beavon, the shortest player on the park. That leaves John Sheridan’s side five points from safety having earned just two points from the last 33 available.
Chesterfield brought in Leon Clarke for the last game of his loan spell from Swindon Town and the team selection looked spot on very quickly.
Alex Mendy swept through the middle, played the ball wide for Craig Westcarr and his cross reached Morgan via a faint Clarke touch and the striker stroked home from close range to register his first league goal in 14 months.
The game was very staccato with injuries combined with plenty of offside flags and needless stoppages ahead of Wanderers’ equaliser, a real pinball of a goal.
Matt Bloomfield’s corner saw Trotta have efforts blocked on the line by Danny Whitaker and Simon Ford, and Dave Winfield hit the bar before the ball was only partially cleared to McNamee, on the box edge. He controlled well to lift a shot above the crowd and into the top corner to level the contest. Several Spireites had the opportunity to put some distance on the ball, but none took it.
Chesterfield regained the lead with a bit of route-one football. Lee’s goal-kick towards Clarke was missed by both striker and defender Winfield but Morgan read the bounce well and hit the rising ball perfectly to regain the lead with a box-edge shot.
Long-range efforts from both sides were the order of the day and neither side could carve out gilt-edged openings.
Trotta tried his luck from 25 yards as the defence failed to block him and the ball zipped along the surface to beat Lee’s right hand. It was not what the visitors deserved.
Keeper Nikki Bull launched the ball into the box, Aaron Downes got his head to it but the ball was only helped on towards the goal where Beavon was poaching and he directed the ball into the net.
A bemused Sheridan said: “We’re obviously very disappointed the way the game’s turned out.
“The game was there if we wanted it; we’re as good as anyone going forward but we do some silly things.”
