No chairman, bottom of the table, no wins in nine league games and 10 players out injured – Danny Wilson could be forgiven for turning tail and running.

Instead, the Chesterfield boss is plotting the ‘little steps’ his side need to take to ease the tension around the Proact, starting at Fleetwood Town tomorrow.

An impending cash flow crisis has engulfed the club in the wake of Dave Allen’s resignation as chairman – a bolt from the blue in Wilson’s words.

There’s nothing he can do to affect off-field affairs, so rolling up his sleeves and getting on with his job is the only option.

The manager says no one can predict what might happen to the club, but life has to go on.

“That side of the club doesn’t involve me, I’m told what to do as an employee like everyone else,” he said.

“We’ve got to be patient, listen to what’s going on but the football club has to keep running and we’ve got to get some points on the board.

“There’s an uncertainty that will arise when there’s nobody at the helm.

“We’ve got to move on, we’ve got a game to play.

Wilson’s injury crisis has deepened, Jon Nolan, Ched Evans and Liam Graham the latest to pick up knocks.

There’s little doubt Chesterfield are on the ropes but Wilson wants them to come out swinging, whatever their motivation.

“You get this siege mentality type of thing and that’s the only way you can do it,” he said.

“If it’s the players looking to enhance their reputation or move on or get off the bottom of the league, then we have to use the platform at Fleetwood to do that.

“Little steps if you like, go and get three points at Fleetwood and go from there.

“That’s our responsibility.”
