Two teams who started the league season with defeats face each other in the Carling Cup tonight.

Chesterfield travel to Rochdale to face a team dejected from an opening day league defeat at Sheffield Wednesday. Dale lost 2-0, the nearest they came to scoring being an Ashley Grimes effort that hit the woodwork. John Sheridan’s side lost at Tranmere and he’ll be hoping his side create more chances than they did there.

The manager is still desperately trying to add to his squad. Heaid: “For the first game, without looking great, I thought we looked comfortable up until the goal. But I know what we need. I’d tried my hardest in the week leading up to the game and for the three or four weeks before that to bring players in. I’m very close to bringing one or two in but at this moment, we’ll use the players we’ve got.”

There’s no doubt Spireites are looking to progress at Spotland: “Ask any one of the lads who knows me, I take everything seriously. Eight-a-sides in training, I hate losing at anything, I’ll never change and I want the team to be successful.” Dean Holden and Derek Niven, playing subs last weekend, are hoping for a start. Drew Talbot could move from full back to wide right with Jack Lester likely to be rested ahead of the weekend home match with Stevenage.
