CHESTERFIELD squandered the chance for a precious away win, instead having to settle for a 1-1 draw against Bury on Tuesday night, writes Ricky Charlesworth.

Nicky Ajose gave the Spireites the lead but they were pegged back by the hosts in the second half, with Steven Schumacher heading home for the Shakers.

The Spireites made three changes to the side which lost at Carlisle ten days ago. Jamie Lowry, Nicky Ajose and Alexandre Mendy were the trio to come into the starting line-up with Mark Allot, James Hurst and Scott Boden all dropping out.

It was Ajose who gave the visitors the lead shortly before the break. Alexandre Mendy worked in a cross from down the right flank, with Ajose tapping home at the back post for his first goal in Spireites colours.

John Sheridan’s men could have added to their tally just two minutes later but Mendy saw his goal-bound effort saved by the legs of Bury’s keeper Cameron Belford in what was a great chance to double their lead.

After half-time, Bury came out fighting and stepped up in pursuit of the equaliser. First, David Worrall pulled the ball back across the box only for substitute Lenell John-Lewis to lash his effort wastefully wide.

John-Lewis then got on the end of a free-kick, only for Tommy Lee to make a superb save in the Spireites goal. The breakthrough did finally materialise shortly after. Chesterfield failed to clear a corner and paid the price when Steven Schumacher nodded in from 6 yards out.

It could have got a lot worse late on when Schumacher again had a free header, but this time saw the ball nestle on the roof of the net much to Chesterfield’s relief.
