Chesterfield will take confidence from their first half performance against Sheffield United according to boss Danny Wilson.

The Spireites manager insisted there were positives from the Proact derby game, which ended 4-1 to the Blades.

United were worthy winners in the end, but trailed 1-0 at the break thanks to a Jon Nolan goal inside two minutes.

And the shift put in by his men during the first 45 minutes will stand them in good stead for their next outing, a visit to Fleetwood Town.

“We’ve got to take a lot of confidence from how we played,” said Wilson.

“We’re playing one of the, arguably, champions elect in our league and we’ve fared very well for large parts of the game.

“Our undoing has possibly been ourselves.

“I think we can take a lot of out of it, they can go to Fleetwood knowing they can win the game.

“Lots of positives, the first half was excellent. You can’t knock the players for how they performed in the first half.”

It was in the second half that the game was lost, the Blades heaping misery on a Spireites side now winless in nine League One outings.

Wilson claimed it was their own mistakes that took the game away from the hosts.

“It’s not the performance that worried me, it’s the conceding of the first goal, that’s the frustrating part,” he said.

“We had done our homework, we knew what kind of runs certain people would make in the game.

“Freeman is one that comes from out to in, he comes into those areas all the time and we had him and then let him go.

“He gets a free header and that is poor.

“They showed they were a better side but I think we did ourselves a massive justice up to their first goal.

“In the second half, defensively, I think there was a lot left to be desired.”
