Things look up for Downes

CHESTERFIELD long-term injury victim Aaron Downes expects to take some part in tomorrow night’s opening pre-season fixture at Conference National Alfreton Town.

The Australian centre-back missed the whole of last season and hasn’t played at all since a second cruciate ligament injury picked up at Port Vale back in February last year.

That second blow came in just his seventh match back after a similar injury sustained in April 2009 at home to Darlington.

Downes confirmed his knee is now 100 per cent and admits he’s nervous as he prepares to kick a ball in anger for the first time in ages.

Another man who was absent for much of the Championship campaign, Jamie Lowry, is also fit.

He made a handful of sub appearances in the latter stages of last season after well over a year out with a similar injury.

One man who is a little behind his colleagues is Dean Holden who has had a hernia problem
