Clayton Donaldson remains Chesterfield’s preferred option to replace departing striker Craig Davies.

His deal is due to run out shortly with Crewe Alexandra.

League Two’s Golden Boot winner, a target of Chesterfield four years ago when a York City player, has plenty of other suitors, including Bradford City.

Yeovil Town left-back Nathan Smith remains a potential target for Spireites boss John Sheridan as does Derby striker Chris Porter, once a player for Sheridan at Oldham.

Paul Turnbull (Stockport) and Kyle Bennett (Bury) are also players Chesterfield are believed to covet.

Meanwhile, Mansfield Town manager Paul Cox has quashed speculation linking them with Chesterfield striker Jack Lester. .

Daniel Sturridge is determined to use the European Under-21 Championship to break into the senior England side next season.

Several of Fabio Capello’s current squad made the step up after starring at previous tournaments and the same is likely to happen following this month’s finals in Denmark.

With many of England’s recent performances leaving much to be desired, the next three weeks look like being an ideal opportunity for the next generation to prove they are ready for a senior call

Sturridge is arguably at the front of the queue, with the Chelsea striker having enjoyed a stellar second half of the season on loan at Bolton Wanderers.
