SPIREITES put the disappointment of back to back friendly defeats behind them with a comfortable win against Championship neighbours Derby County, writes Phil Tooley.

The kick-off was delayed for 15 minutes due to a rush of late comers and there was a further delay midway through the half when County’s Jeff Hendrick was stretchered off with a neck brace in place after an awkward fall. The Doctor on duty later confirmed it was a wrist injury, probably a trapped nerve, though the player had been sent to hospital for a precautionary x-ray.

That halt in play led to an increased tempo after a very quiet start. Ben Davies and Roope Riski had chances ahead of a glancing header that flew wide from Marc Richards.

However the Spireites striker didn’t have long to wait to score. Danny Whitaker’s ball from the left was cut back to the ex-Barnsley man but his shot was saved, though the rebound fell kindly and Richards stabbed home from 10 yards.

The scorer blazed wide with the first half’s last action following a Drew Talbot angled effort that hit the bar.

Richards’ close range snap-shot from a Craig Westcarr cross almost doubled the home advantage at the start of the second half. The pair, having done a decent job, were replaced soon afterwards.

Whitaker and Jordan Bowery forced good saves from Adam Legzdins as Spireites continued to press and it came as no surprise when Bowery headed home from close range following exquisite work on the right by Tendayi Darikwa.

The dominance continued when Jack Lester chipped forward for Bowery to score again but the final goal came Derby’s way. Ex Spireite Jamie Ward wriggled free to tee-up Steve Davies for an injury time consolation.
