Danny Wilson is pleased with the pace at which his players have gelled this season.

Chesterfield fielded six summer signings in the 3-1 win at home to Swindon Town on Saturday.

And Wilson has been impressed with the way the new boys have settled in the squad.

He said: “Lots of things have pleased me - the fact the lads are gelling together quickly. We’re not having to wait on one or two to get up to speed or get an understanding of strengths and weaknesses.

“We always insist on a tough pre-season away from the grind of the training ground.

“I don’t think you ever sure it’s going to happen in any given time span. This time I think they’ve done very well.

“We’ve gotten over that hurdle very quickly.”

Though clearly happy with Saturday’s win over Swindon, Wilson was keen not to get carried away.

“What pleased me more than anything was they used that grey matter between their ear-holes and that’s what they’ve got to do on a regular basis,” he said.

“They worked very hard but they worked smart. They stuck to their task.

“They had tremendous discipline in their defensive work but on the attacking side of it we attacked really well and when we needed to we kept hold of the ball.

“We’re two games in and no-one is taking anything for granted.”

The Spireites manager has no fresh injury concerns ahead of the visit of Walsall to the Proact Stadium on Tuesday night.

And believes his side is in for a tough test against a side he predicts will be up there challenging once again this season.

He said: “We’ve had them watched a couple of times already. They’ve had a lot of new players in the side. That in itself could take a bit longer, we’ve been very fortunate on that.

“They might be taking a little bit longer. They have got players in the team, like Swindon, who, if you don’t respect what they’ve got, can hurt you.

“They’re capable of coming here and winning the game should we not be on top of our game.”

And added: “If we’re going off last season I think they (Walsall) will be (challenging). I think they’re stronger than last year. They’ll be thinking they can go a step further.

“From our point of view it could be any team challenging up there. It’s whoever gets that little bit of a run and a spurt on, they will be difficult to stop, as Walsall proved last year.

“There’s nothing in the league that will strike any fear into us. We’ve got to keep everyone fit, together and on the pitch.

“That will be the main concern. If we do that then we can be competitive in every game we play.”
