Spireites fan view: '˜I vowed not to go to a game if we signed Ched Evans'

I am not impressed.

Firstly, from a pure footballing point of view, we have just signed someone who hasn’t kicked a ball in the professional game in near enough four years.

How on earth that can benefit a side currently bereft of ideas and quality is beyond me, when our loyal fans are crying out for some positive reinvestment to a squad that has been decimated for the need to make a quick buck.

There simply has to far better options out there. Fitness and form are massive gambles.

From a PR point of view, despite the conviction being quashed, pressure from sponsors, famous fans or the general public has meant nobody dare sign Ched Evans as it simply hasn’t been worth the hassle.

We have exposed ourself to a whole world of negative publicity over the next four months and at a time when many loyal to the club are questioning decisions from the powers that be, a signing so divisive amongst the fans is not a wise one to make.

Additionally, over the next three months, how many people are going to rush to spend fifty quid on the new shirt at the club shop with EVANS emblazoned on the back? Not many.

Fans are essentially the ones who are the reason for the existence of football clubs and we deserve much better than what we’ve been served up in recent years.

I have been a loyal fan of Chesterfield since the day I was born. But I am not a liar and am not a hypocrite. I vowed to not go to a Spireites game if we signed Mr Evans and I stand by this.
