Crewe Alexandra boss Dario Gradi has indicated he expects his leading scorer Clayton Donaldson to join Chesterfield ‘within the next few days.’

The 28 goal former York City and Hibernian striker has long been linked with a move to the B2net Stadium.

Rochdale’s former Millers frontman Chris O’Grady is also still believed to be on John Sheridan’s radar, even if the Donaldson deal goes through. O’Grady still has a year of his contract to run at Spotland so a fee would need to be paid.

Sheridan’s search for two strikers sees him attempting to replace Craig Davies, who’s joined Barnsley, and former loan man Deane Smalley, now at Oxford United.

However it’s well known that the management team are confident that teenager Jordan Bowery has all the attributes to break through to become a regular starter, though the frequent sub needs to add more consistency into his game for that to happen.

Spireites return to pre-season training on Monday with left back Nathan Smith and central midfielder Mark Randall signed up and the manager indicating he wants at least another four players before the season starts with a trip to Tranmere Rovers in August.

Birmingham have signed former Inverness striker Adam Rooney on a two-year-deal.
