Saunders, who took over the Proact Stadium hot seat in May after Paul Cook’s exit, will find out on Friday (November 6) if he has won the accolade.

Following a winless six-game September, Saunders’ new-look Chesterfield began October with a 2-1 victory on the road at struggling Crewe Alexandra.

Goals from Sylvan Ebanks-Blake and Ian Evatt recorded a memorable 2-1 win at table topping Walsall followed by a 3-0 home victory to Southend United.

He will face stern opposition from Gary Caldwell who steered Wigan to 12 points from an unbeaten six-match-month and up to fifth in the league table.

Bradford City’s Phil Parkinson, 11 points from five unbeaten, and Mark Robins of Scunthorpe United, whose results included a 3-0 win at the Proact.

Whatever the outcome, it is sure to be a memorable few days for Saunders whose side face FC United of Manchester in the Emirates FA Cup on Monday.

Chesterfield have been allocated 600 standing tickets for the first round tie, which went on sale to season ticket holders on Wednesday morning.

The match at the Rebels’ new Broadhurst Park ground will see current Spireites stars Charlie Raglan and Ollie Banks return to their former employers.

FC United, of the National League North, lost 3-1 at Boston on Saturday. Monday’s cup tie will be televised live on BT Sport (7.45pm kick off).

Ahead of the clash, Saunders said: “I’m still building the team. There are still weaknesses in what we do but we’re looking a lot more resilient every week.”

- Chesterfield’s AGM originally scheduled for Monday, November 9 has been switched to November 23 (7pm start) at the Proact due to the televised cup tie.
