Danny Wilson believes his side lacked the ‘cutting edge’ to get anything at Southend.

The Spireites went down 1-0 to a Adam Thompson strike and despite pushing hard for an equaliser, Wilson feels his players failed to deliver in the final third.

Wilson’s squad have now gone five games without a win in all competitions with an even more worrying recent record away from home.

The Spireites are without a win away from home since beating Barnsley at Oakwell last season - 10 away trips ago.

“There was nothing in the game and we’ve lost by a slender goal,” said a frustrated Wilson.

“We didn’t have the cutting edge to get back in it unfortunately.

“We got into good positions in the final third but the final ball was never there.

“The decision making when we were in those positions just wasn’t there and we let those opportunities fritter away.

“We didn’t produce the standard of ball we have in recent games and certainly at the start of the season.”

The one positive from the encounter was the return of Liam O’Neil.

The 23-year-old, who has not played first-team football since March, played all 90 minutes and seemingly came through unscathed.

Wilson added: “He’s worked really hard with Mal Purchase to get fit after a long lay off.

“It wasn’t ideal to put him in so soon after his injury but we had no real choice.

“Sometimes you just don’t have a choice and you have to play players when they aren’t 100% ready.

“As expected he’s really tired in the dressing room after that. But other than that he feels okay and that’s a big boost for us going forward.”
