Sickly Spireites need Trophy tonic

chesterfield will be hoping to find some success tonight in what’s been a largely disastrous season to date.

John Sheridan’s men travel to Preston North End for the Northern Semi-Final of the Johnstone’s Paint Trophy.

The manager looks set to select a strong side for a match he’ll be under pressure to win. Sheridan has used 21 different players in the two previous rounds of the tournament, a 3-1 win at Notts County and a 4-3 home win over Tranmere Rovers.

He’s now without loan defender Jonathan Grounds and midfielder Lee Johnson who have started both previous games while centre-half Neal Trotman is cup-tied.

Midfielder Mark Randall is out for up to six weeks after breaking a bone in his left hand during last week’s Central League Cup game victory at Port Vale.

Nathan Smith missed theSpireites’ last game, the home loss against Sheffield United, with a hamstring strain and may not be risked, so loan left -back Scott Griffiths is expected to continue. Keeper Tommy Lee, out since September with a groin injury, could return.

Striker Jack Lester, who returned for a few minutes in the Blades game, is expected to start alongside Jordan Bowery whilst Craig Westcarr, also a sub in the last game, should get the nod ahead of loanee Tope Obadeyi.

Danny Whitaker, Dwayne Mattis and Derek Niven will be battling for the central midfield spot vacated by Johnson whilst Dean Morgan will also be hoping for a recall after having not started for six weeks.
