For the second time this summer Chesterfield have been linked with Scottish forward Ryan Dow.

Reports north of the border say that the Spireites are leading the chase for the 25-year-old.

Other than a loan spell at Forfar Athletic, Dow has spent his entire career with Dundee United but is a free agent.

His name was thrown up by the Chesterfield rumour mill a month ago, but at that time there was little substance to the link – although The Derbyshire Times understands Chesterfield have always been a club he would like to speak to.

In May his agent was certain a move to England would be on the cards.

Now, it appears the Spireites will talk to the Scot this week.

As many as eight clubs in England are said to be tracking Dow.

He hit the net just twice last season, in 21 appearances.

Dow seemed set to sign a pre-contract with St Johnstone in January.

That was still the likely destination for the forward at the start of last month, St Johnstone boss Tommy Wright insisting he was still determined to land Dow’s services but also warning he wouldn’t wait forever.

By mid-May however, Wright decided to stop chasing the transfer.

Chesterfield will be keen to sign another attacker after watching target Lee Novak sign elsewhere.

Last season’s top goalscorer, who was on loan from Birmingham, has joined Charlton Athletic on a three-year deal.

Although Danny Wilson said the 27-year-old was someone he was hoping to bring in on a permanent basis, Novak told The Star that Chesterfield never actually put an offer on the table.

Sylvan Ebanks-Blake remains at the Proact, despite heavy speculation that he would leave this summer.

The veteran, along with new signing from non-league Kristian Dennis and youngsters Rai Simons and Jake Beesley, make up the current strikeforce.
