Spireites won’t be able to formally clinch promotion this weekend at Hereford United. But they may well get mighty close!
Wycombe’s midweek draw at Chesterfield’s next opponents means they can only muster a maximum of 86 points now, just eight more than John Sheridan’s side has already amassed. Fourth placed Bury, who have a game in hand (Burton at home April 12) can also reach 86 whilst third spot Shrewsbury Town can get just 84.
All four front runners have tricky away games ahead. Shrewsbury visit Aldershot and a failure to win coupled with a Chesterfield victory at Edgar Street will mean Spireites would only need a win over Macclesfield Town in their next game to clinch it. If Shrews lost this weekend, a win and a draw would be enough for the B2net side to plan with total confidence for League One.
Bury go to Northampton and Wycombe visit Oxford and they have each other to play as well, on April 30, meaning only one of the sides can actually reach 86 at this stage, another positive string in Sheridan’s bow. Chesterfield’s last two visits to Edgar Street have spawned poor performances and defeats and Bulls’ draw against Wycombe shows they are no pushovers.
