League One’s top goalscorers Scunthorpe have hit Gillingham for five and fired four past both Southend and Walsall en route to the division’s top spot.

Scunthorpe Telegraph writer Paul Crute believes it’s a result of the philosophy Graham Alexander has installed since March.

Crute said: “We do not seem to have been as solid at the back as we did last season but even if we do concede one we have enough going forward to compensate.

“The blend of attacking football Alexander has tried to instil has worked a treat.”

The Iron are reaping the benefits of a fine finish to the last campaign.

“I don’t think anyone has been surprised, knowing that if we continued the momentum we had at the end of last season, when we won six on the bounce, we could have a very good start,” said Crute.

“We kept most of last year’s squad together and added to it during the transfer window.”

One player sure to be spoken about at length in the Spireites’ dressing room this week is Josh Morris.

Crute says the 25-year-old midfielder, with 13 goals to his credit already, has been ‘unstoppable.’

“He currently seems to be having his own goal of the season competition with superb strikes against Bury and Northampton as well as proving a very adept penalty taker,” he said.

“For any player to score that many so early on is very good but for a midfielder to do it is even better.

“It is not only his goals but his assists that have also proved useful setting up five of the Iron’s goals. By far the best signing of the summer.”

Another good sign for the promotion hopefuls is the return to fitness of Paddy Madden, who came off the bench to score twice on Saturday against MK Dons.

And a new face is proving to be an ‘exciting talent.’

Crute said: “Playing on the opposite flank to Morris, Duane Holmes is very quick, is prepared to run at players and has a decent shot on him.

“He was in and out of the team at the start of the season but has now established himself in the side.”

Likely line-up (4-5-1): Anyon, Wiseman, Toffolo, Mirfin, Wallace, Holmes, Morris, Bishop, Smallwood, Dawson, Hopper.
