The Chesterfield manager, who is expected to lose striker Ched Evans to Sheffield United in the coming days, hopes to benefit from increased resources if any of the under-contract talent at the Proact depart.

A fee in the region of £500k has been talked about in relation to Evans’ return to the Blades, but with Chesterfield’s finances looking less than rosy in recent times, it’s unlikely Caldwell will be presented with a substantial warchest.

Departures do free up space in his wage bill, however, and he’s already told three of the club’s bigger earners they can leave this summer.

Addressing the hypothetical exit of any player in return for a cash deal, he said: “I think that would help with budget.

“If players leave, the wages obviously go first and foremost which obviously goes straight in the budget.”

The Scot has been assured that if the club can afford it, they’ll channel a portion of transfer fees into the playing budget.

“Any transfer fee we can get, I got told in the meeting last week that if at all possible, some of that will go back into the funds for next season,” he added.
