The midfielder, recently returned from a seven month injury layoff, uses Barnsley as the example of what can be achieved in League One despite a poor start.

Chesterfield have just one win in nine league outings and are desperate to turn their form around.

They still have their sights set on glory this season, says O’Neil.

He said: “You’ve got to look at going up haven’t you? Otherwise what’s the point.

“You can’t just come into a season thinking you’ll be happy with midtable because there’s no ambition.

“In the table at the moment it’s not what we wanted but we’ve got to put it right.

“But we’ve got to take it game by game and that starts with Fleetwood.

“Look at Barnsley last season, they were bottom of the league but went up in the play-offs. It’s definitely an option.”

O’Neil expects a good footballing side from Fleetwood tonight, and says the Spireites have to expect a victory, regardless of the opposition.

“We did a bit based on them on Monday, I think they’ll want to play football but they do have a lot of weaknesses we can use in our favour,” he said.

“The gaffer is confident and he’s told us what to do.

“They’ll play out through the back a lot, we’ve got to press high and win the ball high up the pitch.

“I think every game is must-win, we don’t want to go into any game thinking we might win, we’ve got to go in thinking we’ll get three points.”
