Chesterfield survived a late scare to win at non-league neighbours Matlock Town.
Dean Morgan put the Spireites ahead in the first half from a short distance, jinking around an entire yellow-shirted defending unit to convert, following good set-up work from midfielder Craig Clay.
Matlock survived further raids until Jordan Bowery’s deft header set up Jack Lester, who rammed home instinctively, with the sort of precision and power that is his trademark.
Bowery figured in the third goal, too.
Summer signing Nathan Smith opened his account for Spireites from a pass from Bowery to make it an emphatic 3-0 lead over the Gladiators.
One time Sheffield United conscript Ryan Mallon gave the home fans something to cheer with a reply near the death.
But Bowery almost completed a decent night’s work - he just couldn’t get the better of the home goalie.
The problem John Sheridan will want answers to today will be the status of centre half Simon Ford, who limped off near the end.
