Chesterfield easily retained the Banner Jones Cup, won just once by the hosts back in 2002, notching up another high score after a 6-1 win at Staveley.
It was all one-way traffic in the first half but it took until the 24th minute for the stubborn Gladiators rearguard to be breached.
Jordan Bowery, Jacob Hazel, Scott Boden, Mark Randall and Jonathan Wafula had all had decent chances before Boden tapped in after a Hazel ball pin-balled somewhat before reaching the scorer.
Bowery doubled the score, getting on the end of a ball after a sweeping move instigated by triallist Manny Panther. Wafula was then upended in the box and Randall repeated his Pirlo style penalty to score.
Wholesale half-time changes saw Sam Togwell and Marc Richards make their first appearance in blue but within two minutes, Matlock had pulled one back. Former Spireite Gareth Davies, himself only on at the break, took a quick free-kick that surprised the wall-building defence.
More sleeping at the back let ex Barnsley man Nathan Joynes in, but he shot wide from a gilt-edged position.
Richards was soon on the score-sheet, beautifully placing a long-range free-kick into the back of the net. Soon after Allott hit the underside of the bar, the loose ball was then cleared and Togwell had a shot.
Richards made it a brace from the spot after he was fouled as Spireites maintained their domination to the end.
