Chesterfield ran out comfortable 4-1 winners of the inaugural Autoworld Cup in an entertaining game at Matlock Town.

In a game in which Paul Cook used 22 players, including a number of trialists, the manager was able to give Drew Talbot a run out after he had recently had an injection to try and cure a troublesome groin injury.

The Spireites took the lead on 13 minutes with their first move of note.

Romy Boco, a Paul Cook player at Sligo Rovers and Accrington Stanley who is training at the Proact Stadium, forced a diving save from Ross Atkins. The palm-away fell to Jimmy Ryan who crossed in for Armand Gnanduillet to head in from close range.

Benin international Boco skied a shot well over after Gary Roberts set up and Gnanduillet robbed former Spireite trialist Oscar Radford but his cross in was cleared.

Ryan went close from distance and Sam Morsy forced a point-blank save, as did Roberts, as the strong visitors’ 11 dominated but were unable to breach the Gladiators’ defence again ahead of the break.

Chesterfield reappeared for the second half surprisingly unchanged.

Roberts delayed far too long after Gnanduillet set him up two minutes into the second half and his effort was blocked.

Ian Evatt’s flying volley from a corner was saved as Spireites continued to boss the game.

Danny Holland headed a Jason Stokes free-kick against the bar in a rare Matlock raid and they were made to pay for that when Sam Morsy doubled the league side’s advantage on the hour with a 25 yard crackerjack and Eoin Doyle hit an unstoppable 15 yarder five minutes later.

Nicky Featherstone, 25, formerly of Hull City, Hereford United and Walsall came on as a trialist, one of a number of such players used though one of only a handful named by the club, ahead of Matt Andrews pulling one back for the hosts with a crisp 20 yarder.

Dan Gardner made it four just before the end with a solid run and shot from the box-edge and he was inches away from a spectacular second moments later but his curling effort just moved away from the target.

Chesterfield’s pre-season programme moves up a couple of gears at the weekend when they travel to Shrewsbury Town, relegated from League One last season, before they make the short trip to Nicky Law’s Alfreton Town next Tuesday evening.
