Chesterfield fans turned up last night for their first significant glimpses of new signings Armand Gnanduillet and Richard Brindley.
And by half-time they’d both made a substantial impact for the team in Spireites’ victorious Derbyshire FA Senior Cup quarter final against Belper Town.
The visitors took an early lead when Shaun Tuton was allowed to turn and shoot from the six yard box before a Brindley cross was handled by ex-Spireite Andy Rushbury. Mark Randall calmly slotted the ball home from the penalty spot.
Six minutes before the break Frenchman Gnanduillet, who’d looked very raw up to then, pressured Matt Millns into an error, he made 10 yards rapid progress, including a step over or two, before shooting home from the box-edge.
Jacob Hazel made it 3-1 shortly after the break, heading in a Randall cross from close range.
Simon Harrison had a chance from 40 yards to level when keeper Josh Barrington was stranded, but his shot dropped inches wide though moments later the Nailers had reduced the deficit when another ex-Chesterfield player, Steve Warne, headed through a crowded box.
Randall’s audacious shot straight from the restart missed by a whisker but soon after he conceded a penalty. Harrison’s powerful spot kick was palmed away by Barrington. From the rapid breakaway Jack Lester had the ball nicked off his toe by Aaron Chapman in goal.
Gnanduillet forced a fine tip-over save after Lester’s inch perfect pass and from Townsend’s corner Jonathan Wafula headed in to make it 4-2 five minutes from time.
