A goal in each half condemned Chesterfield to their only pre-season defeat.

A goal in each half condemned Chesterfield to their only pre-season defeat.

Championship side Hull City, who were the better side throughout, saw Matty Fryatt score midway through the first half. He’d hit the bar early on and miscued from a great position just before the goal but he pounced on the loose ball after Robert Koren’s shot was only partially blocked.

Defender James Chester headed in, unmarked, at the far post following a 71st minute left wing corner. Jack Lester had Spireites closest call, at 0-0, when his shot was deflected just wide following a good pass from trialist Rohan Ricketts.

Ricketts looked sharper than he had done against Coventry and will learn his fate today.

John Sheridan’s men showed some decent form in patches, but looked short in attack. Jordan Bowery ran his heart out but didn’t find himself in a shooting position, though his markers were of better quality than League Two will deliver.

Rumours abound that Sheridan is about to sign Leicester front man Dany N’Guessan for a substantial fee but the manager was coy about things: “I’m trying to bring players in, I’ve spoken to one or two, and hopefully something will happen this week. We need three or four players that will hopefully make us stronger.”

On the final warm up game he rued: “We could have played a lot better, I’m not happy with our performance even though it was only pre-season. It was a good test for us against a good side and I thought they wanted to win it more than us. We didn’t get going.”

Spireites kick off at Tranmere Rovers on Saturday with Nathan Smith and Jamie Lowry, missing at the weekend, expected to be available.
