With 4,200 season tickets already sold, Chesterfield have more fans than ever desperate to know what - and who - may be on the horizon.
However with the club’s manager John Sheridan away on holiday, the news of any new signings appears non-existent, for the time being.
Yet with 25 goal leading scorer Craig Davies now at Barnsley and 2011 on-loan scoring sensation Deane Smalley Oxford United bound, supporters are desperate to know who will be alongside Jack Lester up front in League One.
Exisiting raider Dean Morgan, who has penned a one year deal, could take over much of the void providing he can steer clear of the niggling injuries that blighted much of the recently completed season. Jordan Bowery and Scott Boden spent most of last term on the bench with a handful of cameo appearances, but the B2net’s faithful have yet to be convinced that either can fill the boots of either Davies or Smalley.
Drew Talbot could be thrust into attack, but his exceptional showings at right back and on the right wing make that switch unlikely.
That all leads to desperation amongst the loyals as to who will be drafted in to take on the bulk of the scoring, with Clayton Donaldson (Crewe) and Chris Porter (Derby) the two names most often mentioned, but neither has been formally linked with signing for Sheridan, all the talk is purely speculative.
Left back Scott Griffiths has been told he’s surplus to requirements at Championship bound Peterborough United. But with two years left on his London Road contract and a salary way over what Spireites would want to pay, the likelihood of him repeating what he did so well on loan last season looks low, unless Posh give him an incentive to move on.
In the meantime, fans are hanging on to any rumour, but with Sheridan being as tight lipped as any manager in the game, nothing’s likely to leak from Chesterfield until the deal’s done.
