Former Doncaster defender Sam Hird was switched to a holding midfield role for Chesterfield’s Tuesday’s JPT encounter with Rochdale.
The 26-year-old carried out that role at the back end of last season and that switch helped Chesterfield’s goals-against column to click on much slower than it had been doing previously.
Hird started this term in the heart of the defence, predominantly alongside Liam Cooper, but Ian Evatt’s return to match fitness after not playing since last November means Paul Cook has had three top class central defenders to perm two from.
That means that Hird, despite being one of the stand-out performers during Chesterfield’s race to the top in August and September, unluckily missed out in a few games since. Those early shows led to Paul Cook removing his name from the transfer list, which he’d been on for the previous few months.
