Chesterfield make the short trip to Meadow Lane tonight to kick off their Johnstone’s Paint Trophy campaign.
John Sheridan’s men received a first-round bye as they look to make an impression in a tournament that, in all its guises, has included Chesterfield FC in every season. Despite being ever presents, the Spireites have rarely got a sniff of a gala-day final, the regional semis being their best showing.
With clubs having to select a strong side to avoid a fine, Sheridan will have some difficulty in selecting his side to fit the bill. The injured trio of Tommy Lee, Jack Lester and Simon Ford, plus Jamaica-duty-bound Nathan Smith all feature in the list of most appeared players to date. Smith’s absence means that Jonathan Grounds is likely to start at left-back.
That means the majority of the rest will need to start, or a cheque will need to be sent to the authorities.
Dean Morgan, Aaron Downes plus strikers Jordan Bowery and Scott Boden are the most likely players to be considered for a start at County, who will be without Julian Kelly, sent off for an early handball incident in their 3-0 loss at MK Dons.
County, four times winners at home this season, will consider the likes of Karl Hawley, Sam Sodje and Jude Stirling to start. They all came on as subs at stadium:mk.
