Two Huddersfield Town goals in a disastrous five-minute period sent Chesterfield tumbling out of the Capital One Cup this evening.

Nahki Wells’ third goal of the evening put Huddersfield 4-3 up just minutes into extra time at the Proact this evening.

Wells pounced again after a great run and cross from Joe Lolley saw Jon Stead’s shot saved by Chesterfield goalkeeper Tommy Lee.

And Lolley made it five just minutes later with a superb finish, after a good one-two.

A late equaliser from Stead had earlier sent the clash into extra time, after Chesterfield had been 2-0 and 3-1 ahead.

Stead pounced in injury time after a mistake by Lee, to level the scores at 3-3.

Earlier, Chesterfield had gone 2-0 up through striker from Ritchie Humphreys and his replacement, sub Ollie Banks.

Wells made the Spireites sweat by reducing their lead to 2-1, but Eoin Doyle restored their two-goal lead with a scrappy tap in.

But Wells added his second from the penalty spot after Stead was fouled, and the former Sheffield United man levelled the scores with a dramatic equaliser in added time.

Chesterfield had earlier twice gone close to breaking the deadlock, with Boco and Doyle both enjoying good chances.

Doyle’s chance in particular was gilt-edged, as he found himself through on goal - but somehow placed the ball wide.

Chesterfield goalkeeper Lee had to be at his best to deny Danny Ward and Wells, after Sam Morsy was caught in possession by Conor Coady.

Former Sheffield United duo Stead and Coady were both named in the Huddersfield starting eleven by Academy manager Mark Lillis, following the sacking of Mark Robins at the weekend.

Lee had his first real save to make after 18 minutes, when he diverted Ward’s effort around his post.

Chesterfield, meanwhile, are without defender Liam Cooper, who looks set to join Leeds United after the Championship club had a bid accepted for his services earlier today.
