Chesterfield’s chances of signing Stockport County skipper Paul Turnbull seem to have increased.

The 22-year-old had been courted by League Two Northampton Town but they have now indicated that any hope they had of signing the midfielder is over.

Cobblers chairman David Cardoza, who had agreed a fee with County, declared the “deal was dead” meaning John Sheridan’s hopes of capturing the promising engine-roomer have been revived.

With only left-back Nathan Smith signed, Chesterfield are still looking for a number of players to complete their League One squad, with two strikers, a winger, a defender and a keeper on their shopping list.
