Paul Cook and his Spireites squad are set to return from their pre-season training camp in Portugal.
Now Cook’s attentions will return to trying to bring in up to two strikers and two midfielders.
Chief Executive Chris Turner said: “We can sign players tomorrow and bring them in, but will they be any better than what we’ve already got? Will they improve us? Will they be able to handle League One? Will they take us where we want to go?
“Paul’s got his preferred targets and been chasing them throughout the summer. One or two appear to be coming down to the wire now. ”
Turner added: “I firmly believe that by the first league game of the season, Paul will have his squad fully intact and we’ll be ready to go into the challenge of a League One season.”
Pre-season action gets underway at Silverlands when Spireites visit Buxton on Saturday (3pm). Buxton have ex-Spireite favourite Derek Nivenand former long-serving Rotherham United keeper Andy Warrington.
