SPIREITES’ skipper Sam Hird still hasn’t given up on the Proact Stadium club extending their season.

Following the 2-0 win over in-form Bristol Rovers the former Doncaster Rovers man said: “In the last few games we haven’t put the football performances in that we would have liked.

“But we showed against Bristol Rovers that we can do it and it’s just about putting both aspects, attacking and defending, of the game together.”

The victory enhanced the pain felt by the last gasp loss at Cheltenham Town four days earlier, when Paul Benson scored with the Robins’ only chance deep into stoppage time.

Hird added: “We deserved to win at Cheltenham.

“I’d have been disappointed with even a draw, they had one chance in the whole game and that was in the 93rd minute. We were unlucky there.

“Obviously the play-offs are still possible but a win there would have stood us in good stead.

“Confidence is really good now. We’ve got a good group of lads here who are all together.

“We still believe while it is still possible that we can do it. So if the fans stick behind us, we’ll go to Oxford and give it a good go.

“Obviously it’s going to be tough. I think we need to win eight out of nine games. It’s a tough ask but it’s still possible.”

Paul Cook has been playing Hird in central midfield alongside Sam Togwell and the two have aided Chesterfield’s excellent defensive record and on Saturday they also added to the offensive side of the game. Hird had a couple of close calls in attack as he searches for his first goal since September.
