CHESTERFIELD have signed nine first-year scholars for next season, including the son of the club’s physiotherapist.

Midfielder Alex Hewitt, aged 16, will be hoping to follow in the footsteps of dad Jamie who made 506 league appearances for Chesterfield, the second highest total ever.

He’s one of five players from Chesterfield’s Centre of Excellence system,. Strikers Ben Partridge and Joe Mathers plus defenders Jamie McNicholas and Thomas Colton being the others.

Defender Regan Edridge’s elder brother, Jordan, was a scholar at the club but was released a year ago and he’s recently signed a pro contract for a club in Iceland. Regan had been a member of the Sheffield United academy.

Oliver Brock, midfield or attack, is a former Derby County academy member while Sheffield Wednesday schooled striker Fabien Johnson.

Keeper Cameron Mason completes the list, having been at home town Oldham’s Centre of Excellence.

Three second-year scholars, Jack Waddle, Jacob Hazel and Jonathan Wafula, have been given 12-month pro contracts for next season.
