Chesterfield: Spireites success built on defence

Have your say

Five clean sheets in seven league outings has provided the backbone to Spireites’ table-topping start to the season.

Keeper Tommy Lee pulled off four top class saves at vital times in the otherwise comfortable 2-0 win over AFC Wimbledon at the weekend.

Another pivotal player in the early season success is 21 year old centre back Liam Cooper. His and Sam Hird’s form is keeping marquee signing Ian Evatt on the bench.

Cooper said: “From a defensive point of view, I think the back four and Tommy have got to keep doing what we’re doing and keep as many clean sheets as we can. If we can put two goals away every week and keep keeping clean sheets, we’re going to put ourselves in good stead.”

With a tricky trip to second placed Oxford United at the weekend, Cooper knows how important the game is but he remains pragmatic: He said: “You want to win your home games and get what you can away from home.

“It’s in our hands now, we’ve managed to get the results together but we’ve just got to keep going.

“If we keep winning games then nobody’s going to catch us and that’s what we’ve got to do, we don’t have to worry about points we’ve just got to make sure we win games.”
