The Spireites have turned down two bids for versatile forward Sam Clucas, chief executive Chris Turner has revealed.

While Turner kept tight-lipped on the identity of the suitors for the 24-year-old, it is understood both Wigan Athletic and Reading have expressed an interest.

Clucas impressed greatly after joining from Mansfield Town, scoring 12 goals as he emerged as a replacement for Eoin Doyle who left in January.

Turner said: “The bids have been received in the last seven days and they were both rejected.”

Chesterfield are out of the running for former striker Craig Davies following his release by Bolton Wanderers.

Davies – who topped scored in the Spireites 2010/11 League Two winning side – is thought to be well out of the club’s price range and is likely to remain a Championship player.

Jon Stead remains a top target for new Chesterfield boss Dean Saunders though Bradford City – where the striker spent time on loan last term – are thought to be in pole position for his signature following his release by Huddersfield Town.

Saunders will have cast his eye over the retained list of former club Doncaster Rovers.

He has huge admiration for released 32-year-old centre half Jamie McCombe, who played a key role in the side Saunders set on the way to the League One title in the 2012/13 season.

Saunders will also likely be attracted by winger Kyle Bennett but he looks set to join Paul Cook’s new regime at Portsmouth. Cook is also known to maintain interest in taking Gary Roberts away from the Proact.

The Spireites will play Matlock Town for the Autoworld Trophy on July 14 at Causeway Lane.
