Spireites make the traditional short trip to Matlock Town tonight (7.45pm).

The Banner Jones Cup, won by the hosts just once in 2002, will be on offer.

John Sheridan’s side is likely to feature triallists Chris Sedgwick, Manny Panther and Keith Quinn and Spireites fans will be hoping to see a first glimpse of new signings Sam Togwell and Marc Richards, who didn’t feature in the 6-1 win at Staveley MW. Striker Jack Lester is still recovering from groin and arm injuries but young front man Jacob Hazel, a two-goal scorer at Staveley in a 45 minute appearance, looks set to get more pitch time.

The squad of 21 is a small one, especially with seven subs now allowed on matchdays, so there is a chance that at least one of the triallists could be recruited. Left-back Quinn, a genuine left-footer who has spent most of his playing career in his native Ireland, is perhaps best positioned. With few natural left siders in the squad and only Nathan Smith as a specialist left-back, that area is desperate for cover.

Midfield is also an area of concern for many supporters, so Sedgwick and Panther could be contenders for a spot on the roster. Sedgwick, ex-Miller and Owl, was played on the left at Staveley. He is a right-footer, but with almost 600 first team appearances, his experience could be useful.

Ex-York City man Panther had a steady 90 minutes in central midfield but his lack of league experience could count against him.
