In August 2005, at Saltergate, a Gary Taylor-Fletcher hat-trick inspired a 4-2 win for the West Yorkshire side who included former Chesterfield men Tony Carss and Chris Brandon in their 11.
In other cup meetings, the Terriers have won all three matches in the FA Cup.
But in 2009 Chesterfield came out on top in a Johnstone’s Paint Trophy match that ended 3-3 following a flurry of late goals. Spireites won the penalty shoot-out 4-2.
Current Spireite Gary Roberts was in Huddersfield’s side along with Jordan Rhodes while only Tommy Lee and Drew Talbot, who scored two that night, from the current Chesterfield squad were involved in the match, played at Saltergate.
Chesterfield beat Championship side Huddersfield 2-1 in a pre-season game at the Proact last summer with Roberts and Jamie Devitt on target.
Last season Paul Cook’s men bowed out of the competition at the first hurdle, losing at Leeds United, 2-1,despite playing some excellent football. Eoin Doyle grabbing what turned out to be the club’s Goal of the Season.
Meanwhile, former Chesterfield manager Roy McFarland is the guest at next month’s Senior Spireites lunch. The ex-Derby County and England central defender will talk about his career on Monday July 28.
