He may have been denied a first league hat-trick, but a long-awaited victory and a superb team display were all that Jay O’Shea was worried about following the 7-1 victory over Shrewsbury.

The Irishman had scored a Goal of the Season contender and then, as the designated penalty taker, put away Chesterfield’s first spot-kick of the season to make it 2-0 against the Shrews.

However, midway through the second half O’Shea was replaced by Rai Simons, who went on to bag a brace himself, and the team was also awarded its second penalty of the game.

With the regular 12 yard man watching on, Lee Novak stepped up to score to set him up for an 89th minute goal to register a 7-1 win and his first ever senior treble.

O’Shea said: “It would have been nice to have got a hat-trick but the three points were the most important thing especially because we haven’t won for so long. In the games we were losing there were decisions going against us and we probably should have had penalties but in this game, everything seemed to have all gone for us; hopefully our luck is changing.

“The lads were clinical in front of goal. Everyone was brilliant; the back four, the keeper and the work rate was excellent.

“When we didn’t have the ball we got it back quickly. We worked a lot in the week on going forward because the gaffer thought we were playing a bit sideways and I think it showed in the game that we tried to go forward quicker.”

He added: “It’s a good start, especially under the new gaffer. We had a good result last week against Coventry and carried it on into the weekend. We got a good win, we’ve been on a terrible run before and it’s great to turn it around so quickly under the new gaffer.”

“It’s hard to get out of a rut, especially when it has been going on for so long and things are going against you.”

The former MK Dons man has appeared in every league game this season, all bar one from the start, and he’s a certain pick for Saturday’s trip to Rochdale who themselves had a terrific win last Saturday, away at promotion chasing Walsall.
