Dan Gardner is in little danger of losing his ever-present league status for Chesterfield this weekend.

The midfielder sat out Monday night’s FA Cup win at FC United of Manchester with a neck problem but is set to return for Saturday’s visit of Oldham Athletic.

“Dan felt he was well enough to play but he cricked his neck and it was better for him to be rested,” boss Dean Saunders said.

“He’s had a great season so far.”

Sam Hird and Charlie Raglan are both pushing for starts against the Latics after missing the FC United clash.

But they could face a challenge usurping Richard Wood at centre half after the loanee produced a strong performance on his debut.

Saunders said: “He looked strong and he sees danger early and he linked up well with Ian Evatt.”

The Spireites boss is facing somewhat of a selection headache this weekend after both Ollie Banks and Rai Simons came off the bench to score in the victory at Broadburst Park.

Banks followed up with a goal in the reserves’ 4-1 win over their Rotherham United counterparts.

And former Sheffield Wednesday trainee Manu Dieseruvwe scored twice in the second string match, continuing his form in front of goal after a brace the previous week.

Saunders pledged to work on some of the errors made against FC United but was largely pleased with the performance that set up a home tie with Walsall in the second round.

He said: “We gave the ball away a little too easily at times and it was disappointing to concede from a corner, but those areas give us something to work on in training.”

Oldham come to the Proact on Saturday as team that have struggled for wins but have become increasingly more difficult to beat under the leadership of player-manager David Dunn.

Latics, just above the bottom four, have lost just two of the nine league games he has overseen, though six have been drawn and just one won, a 2-1 triumph at fellow strugglers Swindon Town.
