Last season the Spireites kicked off their preparation with a 3-0 win at Buxton.
This season, having capped 2013-14 with the League Two crown, it’s as you were with a trip to Martin McIntosh’s side at Silverlands on Saturday at 3pm.
However, a year ago, Paul Cook used 24 different players in the match with a totally different outfield eleven used after the break and there were some late substitutions to boot!
This time round he may not be able to stretch to that many players as his search for strikers continues.
Ollie Banks will be missing through injury meaning the manager can only call on 19 signed up players though he’ll no doubt take a few U18s and triallists along as well; the likes of Laurence Maguire and Jake Beesley, who showed promise in their first year at the club last term, will no doubt play some part in proceedings.
Several triallists appeared in the equivalent match a year ago including Ritchie Humphreys, Matty Brown and Jamie Devitt, who all ended up getting signed on.
Chesterfield netted through Armand Gnanduillet, Jimmy Ryan and Eoin Doyle.
Cook’s desire to get hold of the right men at the right price, players that will improve his first eleven, is still burning strong. He’s missed out on the likes of James Wallace, Jordan Hughill and John-Joe O’Toole, but still harbours hopes of reeling in players like Michael Higdon and Jon Parkin who will give him welcome alternatives up front.
Last season’s loan winger from Peterborough United, Daniel Kearns, remains a potential acquisition.
