It was literally a game of two halves as Paul Cook fielded two completely different out-field elevens in each half, with a formation change at the break to boot!

Spireites won the first half 1-0, though Buxton had an early effort chalked off for offside against ex-Mansfield man Stephen Istead. The visitors added two more in the second, during which all five summer signings played and the attacking prowess witnessed had the healthy away following purring with excitement..

Armand Gnanduillet struck just before the break, miscuing somewhat a tee-up from triallist Jamie Devitt, one of five such hopefuls in the starting side. Devitt, freed by Hull City, was joined by Ben Parker, let go by Leeds United, ex-Owl and Hartlepool veteran Ritchie Humphreys and Conor Clifford, who’s just left Leicester City after starting with Chelsea. The fifth triallist remains something of a mystery; he appeared under his first name of Abdul and all that filtered through was that he’s French and has been playing in the Netherlands.

All change and the two triallists from Marine, John Shaw and Matty Brown, joined what otherwise looked pretty much like a first 11.

The first half was 4-2-3-1 and 4-4-2 for the second period and new midfielders Jimmy Ryan, Sam Morsy and Gary Roberts along with Jay O’Shea began to run the show, looking very exciting in the process.

Ryan hammered in a 25 yarder ten minutes into the half before, on 66, another new boy, Eoin Doyle, bundled the ball in from close range. However the story of that goal was all about Roberts, who saw the keeper a few yards off his line and a delightful 35 yard chip forced backpedalling and panic and Tom Turner palmed the ball onto the bar but Doyle won the race for the rebound.

After that the build-up play from Chesterfield was mesmerizing but the final shots tended to be too high, O’Shea and Ryan in particular guilty of missed opportunities.

No midweek game, so Huddersfield Town at home on Saturday is Spireites next outing.
