The B2net Stadium is expected to be announced as the venue for England Under-21s’ European Championship Qualifier against Norway in September.
Chesterfield have successfully hosted under-19 and under-19 internationals at the stadium and the Football Association implied that there may be a higher status fixture awarded this season.
Chief Executive Chris Turner hinted that the club was likely be rewarded with a prestigious fixture at a recent fans’ forum, but no further details have come from the club. Chesterfield were part of the FA’s ultimately unsuccessful bid to host the 2013 finals, so the club therefore looks to be in pole position to be rewarded with the Norway game.
England under-21 coach Stuart Pearce and the FA’s Sir Trevor Brooking attended last season’s Victory Shield match against Northern Ireland and both were complimentary about the facilities and organisation.
England’s last qualifier, a 4-0 win over Belgium, was at Middlesbrough’s Riverside Stadium and watched by 23,000 fans. They also won the away fixture in Norway, 2-1 and currently sit top of Group 8 with two games remaining, in Azerbaijan and the home game against Norway which is scheduled for Monday September 9.
The B2net is also a host stadium for the 2014 Women’s Under-17 UEFA Championship along with Burton Albion, Telford United and Hinckley Town.
